Treasures of the Past

The exhibition shows a selection of the most precious pieces of the institution´s collection – from the fields of archeology, local history, ethnography and art.

You can see artefacts from Bronz Age localities of the region, like the treasure trove from Surice, the copy of golden jewellery found int he calvinist church in Lučenec and other archeological artefacts from Radzovce and Fiľakovo.

The Novohrad Museum and Gallery has been specialized on traditional industrial branches, especially on historical glass and enamelwork – the products of recently extinct factories of the region. The permanent exhibition  presents  theese products too, just as a selection of folk pottery, which had its centre in the neighbouring Halič.

An episode of the local history can be reviewed in one of the rooms, which contains several pieces of furniture and equipment from the Halič castle.

Another remarkable collection of old books bound in parchment or leather is also exhibited permanently.

At last but not least the institution´s rich gallery-collection is represented with a selection of the most precious and from the local respects representative paintings. The artists whose works are exhibited, are mostly connected with their lives with Novohrad region – just as T. Kosztka Csontváry, F. Gyurkovits, J. Szabó, B. Tea at five

Tea is a drink that smells good, refreshes the mind and purifies the body, but also strengthens good friendships. Tea is made by processing of tea leaves of Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis lat.). The oldest record of tea as a medicinal drink comes from 2000 years from China. In China drinking tea was common already in the 4th and 5th century.  About 300 years later the tea naturalized in Japan as well. First samples pervaded into Europe in the 16th century by Arab merchants.  The first trade was carried out by Portuguese, Dutch and English, who started to grow tea in colonies. Tea was brought to Russia from Mongolia in 17th century. At that time it was used only as a medicine.  In Europe it becomes a common beverage only in the 18th century. In the territory of Slovakia drinking tea joined an older tradition of drinking herbal infusions, which have an important place in traditional medicine. Real tea naturalized in our country in the 19th century, it was brought from Russia by traders from Turčian.
Tea was drunk everywhere. Drinking tea did not mean just a regular sitting, it was an important social event. Guests were invited especially in wintertime. Hussifs and guests prepared themselfs properly for this event.    To the tea it was also served rich food - sweet snacks, savory sandwiches, salmon with mayonnaise, cakes, cold creams, ice cream and fine wine.

The exhibition presents objects from the own collections of NMG, tea sets, teapots, mugs and cups of tea, sugar, Samovars and other objects associated with the serving of tea, made from enamel, porcelain, clay, glass and brass.
